What the Day Looks Like

Hotel pickup in the morning, then Ruta Nacional 3 north out of town. The road climbs to Garibaldi Pass, where the lookout drops straight down to Lake Escondido below. From there the vehicles leave the tarmac and run forest tracks toward Lake Fagnano, one of the largest lakes in South America, stretched along the foot of the range.

The off-road stretches cross mud, streams and beaver country, which is why the vehicles are 4x4.

The Asado Lunch

Three of the four tours include food at a lakeside camp, usually lamb or beef on the spit with wine. On the cheapest listing lunch is not included, which is exactly why it costs $82 against $160 to $165 for the others. Add a parilla stop and the cheap version still wins on price, but you carry the logistics.

Which of the Four Tours

The comparison table above lines them up. Our pick for most visitors is the off-road 4x4 lakes tour at $165, because it pairs the strongest review record, 4.9 from 69 reviews, with the lakeside asado. If lunch does not matter, the plain Escondido and Fagnano lakes day is the budget answer at $82. The Escondido and Khami lakes off-road tour at $142 is the middle path with the pass lookout. The 4WD adventure with hidden lakes and Argentine BBQ at $160 adds beaver dams, huskies and an ATV turn, so it suits families with mixed energy levels.

Estancia Harberton

The estancia east of town dates from the pioneering era and still works as a ranch. For the 2025/26 season it opens 11 October to March, roughly 12:00-19:00, with guided house tours mid-afternoon and tours of the Museo Acatushún, which holds the skeletons of birds and marine mammals, at fixed times. The entry fee changes by season and no current figure is published, so check the official site.

The Gable Island Full Day

The Gable Island and penguin colony day with lunch is the deepest itinerary into the far channel: road to Harberton, boat past the Martillo colony, then Gable Island for walking and an estancia lunch. It runs about 11 hours and lists at $439. With only 2 reviews the sample is thin, but the operator, Tangol, is one of the biggest in town.

The King Penguin Day

The king penguin nature reserve visit is a different animal. It is a 12-hour road day clear across the island to the Atlantic coast near Río Grande, to the only king penguin colony in South America that you can reach by land. It lists at $450.

This one is for travellers who specifically want king penguins and accept a lot of driving to get them. Everyone else gets Magellanic and Gentoo penguins far closer, on the Martillo days.

Shorter Penguin Options

If a full 11 or 12 hours is too much, the standard catamaran penguin afternoons watch the Martillo colony from the boat. The licensed walk inside the colony exists as the Martillo Island walk among penguins tour, 10 hours at $530. Colony season runs with breeding, roughly September or October to April, and the reliable visitor window is November to March.

Laguna Esmeralda

The green glacial lagoon in the Valle de Tierra Mayor is the walk everyone does, commonly 4 to 5 hours round trip from the trailhead, our estimate since no official municipality figure exists. The cheapest self-guided option is a transfer-only service that drops you at the trailhead and collects you later.

Vinciguerra Glacier

The step up: a full-day trek to the Vinciguerra glacier and the iceberg lagoon at its foot, crampons on the ice, no glacier experience needed but decent fitness required. The guided listing runs 8 hours at $140 with 4.8 stars from 152 reviews. Go guided.

The route finding above the treeline matters and the ice sections need gear.

Cerro Castor

The southernmost full ski resort sits about 26 km from town, our estimate in round terms, and makes a clean winter day. The 2026 regular season runs 4 July to 25 September, with promotional windows 26 June to 3 July and 26 September to 4 October. The adult day pass in main season is about ARS 146,700 ($97.30) and rates can change without notice.

Snow Parks and the Activity Days

If skiing is not your thing, the snow parks in the Tierra Mayor valley sell sledding, snowmobiles and snowshoeing with transfers and lunch, running 4 to 7 hours. The daylight constraint is real: a 7-hour winter day starts early and ends at dusk, so confirm pickup times and keep evenings free for town.

Punta Arenas

Punta Arenas is in Chile, on the other side of the island. The drive runs roughly 12 hours each way through Magallanes plus a border crossing with paperwork on both sides. No operator sells it as a day trip from Ushuaia and no official page publishes one.

It needs an overnight, at minimum. If someone offers you Punta Arenas in a day, they have not done the sums.

Puerto Williams

The Chilean Navy town across the Beagle Channel looks close, and the water is short. The problem is the ferry schedule, which does not align with a there-and-back in daylight, plus a second border process on arrival. No published day-trip product exists.

Treat it as a separate trip with its own overnight planning.

Antarctica

Antarctic departures from Ushuaia run in weeks, not hours. The shortest expedition crossings take about two days at sea each way. It appears on this page only so nobody books flights around the idea.

Nothing about it is a day trip.
